Farewell

Ryan Leary

President

I write this article as my final message, as President, to the members of Washoe County Bar Association (“WCBA”).  In so doing, I would like to first say thank you to all of my colleagues on the WCBA Board and to our Executive Director.  The success of this association should be attributed to their never-ending hard work, assistance, knowledge, and willingness to exchange ideas.  It is because of these individuals, both past and present, I have valued my time on the Board.  Without their dedication and willingness give of their time, the ability of the WCBA to accomplish what we have, and to deliver the services we endeavor to provide, would be greatly diminished.

Second, in addition to thanking the past and present members of the Board and the Executive Directors I have had the pleasure of working with, I would also like to thank each of you, the individual members of our bar association.  It is because of individuals like you why Northern Nevada is, much more often than not, a wonderful place to practice law. The high level of civility, integrity, collegiality, and professionalism, as well as, the close relationships shared between our members is second to none.  For that reason, I would like to say thank you and encourage our members to keep up the great work.  Though our community and membership continue to grow, and we now find ourselves frequently practicing with individuals that are unfamiliar with Northern Nevada, the foundation we, as members of the WCBA, lay, the tone and patterns we set, and the expectations we hold ourselves to, continue to endure and carry over to everyone that comes to practice here.

Third, on a personal note, I would like to say that though we are all legal professionals by day (and sometimes into the evening as well), many of us have other roles we must fill and obligations to which we must attend that are occurring in our personal lives.  Despite out best efforts to balance these competing obligations and to meet the deadlines we face, “life” sometimes gets in the way and interferes with even the best laid plans.  As busy and as thin-spread as we all seem to find ourselves in recent years, “life happening” only seems to occur with more and more frequency.  For this reason, I want to remind our members that we are all human beings, and say thank to each of you for the understanding, courtesy, and empathy we share.  The ability to simply pick up the phone, have an honest discussion, and to work together with opposing counsel to accommodate each other’s needs, while working towards the end-goal of assisting our clients and resolving our cases, is something the makes North Nevada a special place.  Please keep this in mind as you continue to practice.

Fourth, for those of you who have not already seen it, please make sure to check out our new and improved WCBA website.  After months of hard work by our Executive Director, we are proud to have it up and running.  The website is much easier to navigate and should finally be searchable so that you can now locate the past articles from our contributing authors that we so frequently receive requests for.

Fifth, we hope to see each you in the coming days at what is, for many of us, our favorite event on the WCBA’s annual calendar, the Basque Dinner. This year’s dinner will again be at The Depot, on May 11, 2023, and run from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.  The honoree is Justice James Hardesty (Ret.).  In addition, we also want to invite you to attend our mid-year, ethics CLE, at noon on May 10, 2023, with Stuart Tiecher:  “Siri and Alexa are Out to Get You”.   Finally, on June 14, 2023, at 12:00 p.m., we invite you to attend and participate in our annual Board of Directors election, followed by a CLE presented by Probate Commissioner Gorman.  The topic will be tips and tricks for practicing probate law in Nevada.

Thank you all, I bid you a fond farewell, and hope to see you soon.
